Brief introduction to the course

The HKU MBBS II course “Exercise and Health” aims to provide MBBS students with a broad understanding of the physiological response and adaptation to exercise/physical activity and the important role of exercise in the prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of major chronic diseases. By applying the same standards of critical analysis and evidence-based medicine given to pharmacotherapy to the evidence underpinning exercise, and through the acquisition of knowledge and skills in health-related physical fitness assessment, pre-exercise screening, and exercise prescription, MBBS students will become more confident, competent, and enthusiastic about provide physical activity or even prescribe exercise/physical activity for health.

2 seats (Enrolment will be on a first-come, first-served basis.)

Purpose of this Session

In this tutorial, students will work in small groups to gain hands-on experience in assessing the key components of health-related physical fitness, including cardiorespiratory fitness, muscular strength/endurance, body composition, and flexibility. The tutorial will end with an interactive debriefing discussion session.

Biography of the Teacher

Dr. Joni Zhang is a dedicated educator with a passion for teaching in the field of Kinesiology and Public Health. She has been a valuable member of the Division of Kinesiology at the School of Public Health since 2018, where she has contributed to the teaching of all the courses offered by the Minor in Kinesiology, as well as the design and teaching of the common core course CCST9075 – Be Fit! Be Active!. Joni also serves as a tutor for various MBBS teaching. Joni has a particular interest in interprofessional training, experiential learning, and service learning. She is committed to developing innovative and effective teaching strategies that engage and inspire her students.
