The workshop will discuss practical strategies to guide students across deeper and more expansive levels of inquiry\, adopt a mindset for experimentation\, connect across disciplinary domains of knowledge\, and encourage equitable participation in the classroom. We also delve into the possibilities presented by educational technologies and Generative AI in this endeavour. Join us in exploring these innovative methodologies and discover novel ways to enrich your teaching practice. \nNumber of seats for participants\nUp to 30 teachers per session (Enrolment will be on a first-come\, first-served basis.)\nBiography of the Teachers\n\nDr. Jack Tsao\nDr. Jack Tsao serves as the Associate Director and Senior Lecturer at the Common Core. Before this role\, he taught Common Core courses at the University of Hong Kong’s Department of Psychiatry within the Faculty of Medicine. With a wealth of experience in social impact\, experiential learning\, and project-based initiatives\, Jack focuses on promoting transdisciplinarity and preparing students for their future careers. He is passionate about incorporating innovative teaching methods like gaming\, storytelling\, and digital and artificial intelligence technologies. As a Senior Fellow of Higher Education Advance\, Jack is committed to supporting the professional growth of educators and tutors. In recognition of his contributions\, he received the HKU Outstanding Teaching Awards (Team) as a Team Member in 2022 for the Communication-intensive Courses Initiative. Jack earned his PhD in Education from the University of Queensland\, specializing in comparative and international education\, youth aspirations\, and the sociology of education through an interdisciplinary perspective. \nIn addition to his academic career\, Jack has held various leadership roles in organisational learning and development\, commercial banking\, and entrepreneurship. As a leadership and communications consultant at a global consulting firm\, he trained and coached executives and professionals from multinational corporations spanning diverse sectors\, including banking\, finance\, education\, healthcare\, construction\, FMCG\, and government organizations. \n\n\nMs. Tanya Kempston\nTanya is a Senior Lecturer\, TELL Unit\, Faculty of Education and Programme Director of the Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) in her faculty. She is a recipient of the University Innovation Award (2021) and University Outstanding Teacher Award (2018)\, as well as the Faculty of Education Emergency Remote Teaching Award (2020) and Outstanding Teaching Award (2017). Originally from Northern Ireland\, whilst in Hong Kong she has worked as a secondary school teacher in a government school and Curriculum Development Officer for EDB. She joined the University of Hong Kong in 2009. Her teaching and research interests centre on second language learning and drama-in-education.

In spring 2022\, extraordinary visual representations in mind-blowing photorealism began to occur via social media. Images generated with applications\, such as midjourney\, Dall-E\, or Stable Diffusion\, flooded the News Feeds on Facebook\, Instagram\, and Snapchat. Never before has it become so easy to create visual ideas and representations so fast and convincing.\nArchitecture is a profession that works and communicates with ideas via drawings\, images\, and models. AI is seen by many as a disruption to the profession. This talk will discuss current tendencies\, promises\, and possibilities of AI in Architecture.\nAbout the Speaker\nMr. Christian J. Lange is a registered German architect and Associate Professor (Teaching) in the Department of Architecture at The University of Hong Kong\, where he teaches architectural design and classes in advanced digital modeling and robotic fabrication with a recent focus on AI. He serves as Director of the Fabrication and Material Technologies Lab and is the founder and leader of the Robotic Fabrication Lab – an internationally renowned research environment for architectural robotic fabrication\, prototyping\, and construction. His work and research have been published internationally and featured in over 30 exhibits worldwide\, including the Venice Biennale and the Hong Kong & Shenzhen Bi-city Biennale of Urbanism and Architecture.

Clinical pharmacology encompasses the scientific study between drugs and humans. This is a broad field and includes the development of drugs\, drug metabolism\, pharmacokinetics\, pharmacodynamics\, toxicology\, clinical trials for the evaluation of drug efficacy\, adverse drug reactions and cost-effectiveness\, pharmacovigilance\, clinical guidelines on drug therapy\, pharmacogenetics and pharmacogenomics. Barnes. She has been teaching pharmacology for undergraduates and postgraduates since 2007.

While authentic assessment is not a new idea in itself\, it needs to be rethought in the digital world\, and particularly in the age of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Nowadays\, students do not only use digital technology but live with it: AI is a part of our everyday life in higher education. How could we design authentic assessment in the digital world?\nAbout the Speaker\nDr. Juuso Nieminen is an Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Education\, University of Hong Kong and a Banting Fellow at Ontario tech University\, Canada. He is also an Honorary Fellow at the Centre for Research in Assessment and Digital Learning (CRADLE)\, Deakin University\, Australia. Dr Nieminen studies the social\, cultural\, digital and political aspects of assessment. Why do we assess the way we do? Dr Nieminen’s research focuses on the student perspective in assessment. Dr Nieminen has also examined the matters of inclusion\, accessibility and belonging with respect to assessment and feedback.

From creating personalized learning materials to generating new ideas and perspectives\, generative AI can help us explore the unseen and unlock new possibilities for education. This session examines how generative AIs can be used for instruction and educational development\, including designing a card game for SDG education\, developing tutor bots for supporting learning as well as revamping an existing course to be AI-ready and more accessible. The presentation will illustrate practical strategies and encountered difficulties\, such that colleagues can be facilitated to teach more effectively via generative AIs.\nAbout the Speaker\nDr. Leon Lei is currently a senior e-learning technologist in the Teaching and Learning Innovation Centre at the University of Hong Kong. He is also the Chair of the IEEE Asia-Pacific Region (Region 10) Educational Activities Committee. His research interests include learning analytics\, MOOC for K12 education\, generative AI for education and SDG education. He was awarded the HKU Professional Services Individual Award 2018\, HKU Teaching Innovation Award 2020\, and the Best/Outstanding Paper Award at IEEE TALE 2013\, 2017 and 2020. He is an IEEE Senior Member and an Advance HE Senior Fellow.

Through workshops\, discussion\, and reflection students must critically evaluate the drama activities’ potential in a range of educational contexts and relate practice to theory. The course is infused with the theory and practice of phronesis and encourages teachers to experiment with how drama could be infused into their practice to invigorate classroom management\, language acquisition\, social cohesion\, and communication skills. Theoretical aspects are reinforced via the use of a wide range of readings to enhance understanding. Assessment objectives enable deep critical analysis of drama activities and materials within a wide variety of teaching and learning situations.\nNumber of seats for observers/visitors\n5 seats (Enrolment will be on a first-come\, first-served basis.)\nPurpose of this Session\nJust because we can use generative AI – should we? This session adopts a co-taught\, workshop-based approach and we hope University colleagues will be active observers and participants. Students will work collaboratively to explore their understanding of how Generative AI could have a potentially huge impact on dramatic activity\, specifically scripted drama used with second language learners. We will examine to what extent we use might use generative AI for script generation and how these homogenous resources might be applied/refined in complex real-life teaching and learning scenarios. The necessity of teacher mediation in terms of discouraging a ‘cut-and-paste’ application of generative AI will also be an area of focus. In addition to a PGDE (Distinction) from the Faculty of Education\, HKU\, he has a DipTESOL (Trinity College) and a Master of Applied Linguistics with Distinction (University of Birmingham). Dan is again the course lecturer for the PGDE EDUC7109 elective ‘Using Drama in Language Learning’ in 2023-24 as well as being an MATESOL project supervisor and Senior Research Assistant at HKU. He is a frequent guest speaker\, including hosting play readings and teacher training for the English-Speaking Union.
