SUMMARY:Curriculum-embedded Formative Assessment at HKU
DESCRIPTION:Details\nDate: 15 March 2024 (Friday)\nTime: 1:00pm – 2:00pm (HK time)\nVenue: Learning Lab (RRS321\, 3/F\, Run Run Shaw Building\, Main Campus\, HKU)\nSpeakers: \n\nProf. Luke Fryer\, Assistant Director\, TALIC\, HKU\nDr. Alex Shum\, Senior Lecturer\, TALIC\, HKU\n\n\n \n\nAbstract\n\nFormative testing is a tried and tested means for enhancing learning outcomes and is in fact one the most powerful correlates of achievement in higher education (Hattie\, 2015). It is also efficient and low cost (time and resources; Dunlosky et al.\, 2013). When implemented effectively\, formative testing provides students with regular feedback and corrective opportunities prior to summative assessments\, and teachers with feedback on student performance. Formative testing during class time (synchronously) is far more effective than during individual learning (asynchronously) (Black & William\, 2009). So why isn’t formative testing a core component of classroom experiences during university? \nThis seminar will review results from four years of formative testing in large-scale lecture halls at HKU. The implementation of classroom formative testing and its practical and theoretical outcomes will be discussed. A strong argument for the usefulness of classroom formative testing in everyday tertiary teaching will be put forth and colleagues will be invited to join the discussion. \nStaff are encouraged to come with their experiences using formative testing\, their questions\, and concerns regarding its use. Formative testing is not new\, but it is powerful and underutilised in higher education broadly and at HKU specifically. We aim to convince educators that now is the time to rectify this. The seminar will conclude with a hands-on opportunity to try a formative testing platform designed for lecture halls and quick use. \n\nBlack\, P.\, & Wiliam\, D. (2009). Developing the theory of formative assessment. Educational Assessment\, Evaluation and Accountability\, 21(1)\, 5–31. https://doi.org/10.1007/s11092-008-9068-5\nDunlosky\, J.\, & Rawson\, K. A. Scholarship of Teaching and Learning in Psychology\, 1(1)\, 79–91. https://doi.org/10.1037/stl0000021\n\n\nAbout the speakers\nProf. Luke Fryer\nProf. Luke Fryer is an associate professor in the Teaching and Learning Innovation Centre at HKU. He teaches within and manages the university’s faculty and research postgraduate teaching-learning programmes. He provides consultation regarding grants\, research projects and faculty teaching-learning initiatives.Dr. Alex Shum\nDr. Alex Shum is a senior lecturer in the Teaching and Learning Innovation Centre at HKU. SUMMARY:Empowering Students through Engaged\, Research-Oriented Social Science Classrooms
DESCRIPTION:Details\nDate: 27 March 2024 (Wednesday)\nTime: 12:00pm – 1:00pm (HK time)\nVenue: Learning Lab (RRS321\, 3/F\, Run Run Shaw Building\, Main Campus\, HKU)\nSpeaker: Prof. Austin Strange\, Assistant Professor\, Department of Politics & Public Administration\, HKU\nFacilitator: Dr. Jessica To\, Lecturer\, TALIC\, HKU\n\n\n \n\nAbstract\nThis seminar will discuss a teaching and learning approach that intentionally blurs classroom experiences and student involvement in academic research. The speaker will share his experiences with this approach in several undergraduate and graduate social sciences courses at the University of Hong Kong. The discussion will cover whether and how this approach might be adapted and deployed in other classroom settings. It will also introduce a proposed strategy for significantly scaling the approach into a social science research laboratory model that can be applied to a variety of settings and dramatically increase student research opportunities and improve learning experiences through innovative course design that actively integrates direct student research involvement.\nAbout the speaker\nAustin Strange is an Assistant Professor of International Relations in the Department of Politics and Public Administration at the University of Hong Kong. He teaches and researches international relations\, international development\, and Chinese foreign policy. He is the author of Chinese Global Infrastructure (Cambridge University Press\, 2023) and co-author of Banking on Beijing: The Aims and Impacts of China’s Overseas Development Program (Cambridge University Press\, 2022). In 2022 Austin was awarded the University of Hong Kong’s Early Career Teaching Award. From 2023-2025 he is a fellow in the National Committee on United States-China Relations Public Intellectuals Program\, and previously he was a fellow at the Wilson Center and the Columbia-Harvard China and the World Program. Austin earned a Ph.D. from Harvard University\, an M.A. from Zhejiang University\, and a B.A. from College of William and Mary.

SUMMARY:Open Class Observation - Dr. Peter Lau
DESCRIPTION:Details\nDate: 28 March 2024 (Thursday)\nTime: 9:30am – 11:00am\nVenue: Learning Lab (RR322\, Run Run Shaw Building\, Main Campus\, HKU)\nSpeakers: Dr. Peter Lau\, Lecturer\, TALIC\, HKU\nRegister Now\n \n\nClass Topic\nDesigning learning outcomes and structuring lesson plan \nBrief introduction to the course\nThe course is a requirement for all new full-time research postgraduate students to undertake teaching or assessment duties for their departments. The course aims to introduce the principles of learning\, teaching\, assessment and feedback in HKU’s context as well as to model ways of how teaching can be improved. It explores how to actively engage learners in small group settings and discusses teaching and learning activities typical of tutorials and/or lab-based teaching. Participants will first learn practical teaching strategies\, such as structuring and managing tutorial\, designing high impact tutorial activities and techniques for actively engaging a diverse range of students. Participants will also learn about assessment. With constructive and actionable feedback from teacher and peers\, participants will identify what went well and what needs improvement in their initial teaching practice.\nNumber of seats for observers/visitors\n4 seats per session (Enrolment will be on a first-come\, first-served basis.)\nPurpose of this Session\nThis session aims to prepare the participants for their initial teaching practice by designing learning outcomes and structuring lesson plan. The session will start with recapping the Outcome-Based Approach to Student Learning (OBASL) that mentioned in Module 1. Through various activities\, participants will learn how to design appropriate learning outcomes and lesson plan. Principles and rationale of setting learning outcomes and designing in-class activities will be discussed.\nBiography of the Teacher\nDr. Peter Lau is a Lecturer and Coordinator of the Certificate in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education programme\, which aims to provide training on teaching skills for Graduate Teaching Assistants (GTAs). To facilitate continuous professional development for young/new colleagues\, Peter also supports colleagues working towards Associate Fellow and Fellow of Advance Higher Education by mentoring and reviewing applications. As an advocate for Students as Partners (SaP) in teaching and learning in higher education\, Peter believes that students could contribute great support and insights to teaching development when appropriate opportunities for pedagogical conversation are opened for teachers and students.
