SUMMARY:Open Class Observation - Dr. Angela Yuen
DESCRIPTION:Details\nDate: 28 October 2024 (Monday)\nTime: 11:30am – 12:20pm (HK time)\nVenue: MWT7\, 1/F\, Meng Wah Complex\, Main Campus\, HKU\nSpeaker: Dr. Angela Yuen\, Associate Head (Teaching & Learning) and Lecturer\, Department of Chemistry\, Faculty of Science\, HKU\nRegister Now\n \n\nClass Topic\nFoundations of Chemistry \nBrief introduction to the course\nThis course provides a comprehensive introduction to the fundamental principles of chemistry\, designed for students with limited background in the subject. It covers essential concepts such as atomic structure\, chemical bonding\, thermodynamics and the properties of gases\, liquids\, and solids. Emphasis is placed on developing critical thinking and analytical skills necessary for further studies in chemistry and related fields. This course is ideal for those pursuing science majors or anyone interested in gaining a deeper appreciation of the chemical world without high school chemistry background.\nNumber of seats for observers/visitors\n5 seats per session (Enrolment will be on a first-come\, first-served basis.)\nPurpose of this Session\nChemical Bonding\nBiography of the Teacher\n\nDr. Angela Mai Yan Yuen currently serves as the Associate Head of Teaching in the Department of Chemistry at The University of Hong Kong (HKU). In addition\, she has held the role of Programme Coordinator for the Master of Science in Chemical Technologies for Health and Materials (MSc(CTHM)). \nDr. Yuen has received with several awards and grants in recognition of her contributions to teaching and learning. These include the Award for Teaching Excellence in 2024 and Award for Teaching Innovations in E-learning in 2020\, as well as various Teaching Innovation and Development Grants. She believes that linking students’ personal experiences with chemistry principles is an effective way to ignite discussions about chemical phenomena. By examining the chemistry principles underlying everyday occurrences\, students’ curiosity is stimulated\, which also fosters a greater sense of belonging in students’ learning journey. Dr. Yuen highlights that learning chemistry through daily experiences is inherently interdisciplinary\, as science does not truly distinguish between biology\, chemistry\, and physics in real-world contexts. With such teaching philosophy\, Dr. Yuen is a strong supporter for interdisciplinary and collaborative teaching efforts across different departments and faculties.
