Qualitative Research Methods I
Brief introduction to the course
The course aims to provide students with a foundation in the theoretical underpinnings of qualitative research. The course includes the theoretical ways of thinking about social and educational phenomena— i.e., theories about the nature of social reality (‘ontology’) and how we can gain knowledge of social reality (‘epistemology’). It also provides methodological knowledge on developing strategies for qualitatively planning and designing the research.

Purpose of this Session
This session will introduce various qualitative research approaches and data collection methods, including interviews and observation. Data analysis strategies in qualitative research will be briefly introduced. We will also discuss establishing validity, reliability, and authenticity in qualitative data collection.
Biography of the Teacher
Dr. Jisun Jung is an Assistant Professor at the University of Hong Kong, Faculty of Education. Her current research focuses on the academic profession, doctoral education in East Asia, and master’s education and employment. She has taught in multiple programmes at the Faculty of Education, including undergraduate (BEd), taught postgraduate (Master of Education and Postgraduate Diploma in Education), and research postgraduate (PhD).
