Abstract

Assessment is a context-driven construct, and many factors influence its effectiveness in raising student outcomes. The intersections of technology and assessment are dynamic and constantly evolving, challenging the existing assessment beliefs, perceptions, knowledge, skills, and practices. As new technologies emerge, assessment practices should be adapted to leverage the affordances of technologies in supporting effective learning and teaching. In this talk, I will demonstrate how technologies can be used to optimise the impact of assessment. I will present three case studies drawn from our research projects, including the development and implementation of a computer adaptive test to support language learning of English as an Additional Language or Dialect (EAL/D) students, the use of a Microsoft Excel Macro-enabled data system to support teachers in analysing both dichotomous (multiple choice, True/False) and partial credit (rubrics/scales) items, and the use of AI for self and peer assessment. I will discuss some issues, including access, equity, accuracy, efficiency, and trustworthiness of using technology in assessment. I will conclude by outlining principles for effective integration of technology in assessment to ensure their pedagogical functions.
