Join-the-Conversation – Building a collaborative academic environment: The potential for mentorship

Abstract

Faculty mentorship initiatives often help foster a collaborative and collegial academic community in which there is better support to all faculty members, more productive communications, and a more inclusive culture. Such initiatives may involve regular discussions on good teaching practices, common problems, and how the problems can be tackled collaboratively. Across the University of Hong Kong, a number of faculties have been undertaking faculty mentorship initiatives. In this join-the-conversation event, Prof. Gilberto Leung (Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine) and Dr. Gary Harfitt (Faculty of Education) will share the framework and practices of faculty mentorship in their faculties. We invite you to join us and discuss in what ways the models in these two faculties might be of some relevance to your context and how the entire HKU community can possibly benefit from faculty mentorship initiatives.

About the speakers
Prof. Gilberto K. K. Leung is an academic neurosurgeon and the Tsang Wing-Hing Professor in Clinical Neuroscience at the University of Hong Kong. He serves as the Associate Dean (Teaching & Learning) of the LKS Faculty of Medicine, where he is responsible for all of its undergraduate programmes. He holds a LLM degree in Medical Law and Ethics from the University of Edinburgh and actively contributes towards teaching activities in this area. As the Vice-President (Education & Examination) of the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine, he oversees post-graduate medical training by all 15 specialty colleges in Hong Kong. His role as the Region XVI Chief (Asia-Australasia) of the Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) Programme of the American College of Surgeons also enables him to develop and promulgate training in trauma care in many developing countries. He has supervised 19 past or current post-graduate students, focusing on clinical and translational researches in neuroscience.

Dr. Gary Harfitt is an Associate Professor and currently the Associate Dean for Learning and Teaching at the Faculty of Education, The University of Hong Kong. He has worked in Hong Kong since 1989 first as an English language teacher and Department Head in a local secondary school and since 2002 as a teacher educator at the Faculty of Education. The recipient of several individual and team teaching awards, Gary has worked with pre- and in-service teachers on multiple preparatory programmes and has overseen the introduction of Experiential Learning (EL) into teacher training programmes at undergraduate and postgraduate levels in the Faculty.
