GenAI in the Classroom: Success Stories and Lessons Learned

Abstract

To support HKU teachers in exploring the integration of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) in teaching, learning and assessment, TALIC will be hosting a series of discussion forums in October 2024 to encourage institutional-wide dialogue about effective GenAI practices in the classroom. Academics from different faculties and departments are invited to share their experiences, success stories and setbacks in their GenAI journeys. From the discussion forums, participants can learn about how various GenAI tools could be leveraged to support lesson preparation, student learning, assignment grading and other aspects related to teaching, learning and assessment. Participants are also welcome to raise questions about GenAI application and express views on the direction of GenAI development at HKU.

About the Speaker

Dr. Law Ka Ho
Dr. Law is currently the Associate Head (Teaching and Learning) of Department of Mathematics, HKU. He has been involved in a number of teaching initiatives such as implementing flipped classroom in mathematics courses. He is a Senior Fellow of Advance HE and winner of the Award for Teaching Excellence of the Faculty of Science in 2021/22.

Dr. Carson Hung is a Lecturer / E-learning Technologist at TALIC, specialising in leveraging cutting-edge technologies such as AR/VR, AI, and games to enhance student engagement. With extensive experience in EdTech projects, he is passionate about using innovative solutions to enhance students’ learning experience.

Ms. Stephanie Biedermann is a Senior Lecturer in the Faculty of Law and is a US-licensed lawyer. She specializes in international law, immigration, forced migration, and discrimination issues, particularly for refugees, asylum-seekers, and migrant workers. Her legal experience includes work in the US, the Middle East, and Hong Kong, with a focus on public interest law and access to justice issues.

Prof. Alain JF Chiaradia
Professor Alain Chiaradia is Associate Professor and Deputy Head at the University of Hong Kong’s Department of Urban Planning and Design in the Faculty of Architecture. His specialism lies in network-based morphometrics and design thinking to explore urban design and transport’s health, social, economic, and environmental impacts. In International Research Excellence Assessments 2014 and 2020 RAE, his applied research has been internationally recognised as having “outstanding impacts in terms of their reach and significance”.

Dr. Michael Rivera
Dr. Michael Rivera is a Lecturer in Interdisciplinary Studies at HKU’s Faculty of Social Sciences. He teaches a broad range of courses on anthropology, archaeology, biology and environmental wellbeing, both within his faculty and for the Common Core Curriculum. He is currently engaged in pedagogical research projects looking into care-based and social justice-oriented education, as well as the effectiveness of online tools for course design.

Dr. Sheryl Chow
Dr. Sheryl Chow is a fellow of the Society of Fellows in Humanities and affiliated with the Department of Music. She received her PhD in Musicology in 2023 from Princeton University. She published a journal article in Early Music History, which discusses the transmission of European music theory to China in the late seventeenth century. She also wrote a book chapter on the re-essentialization of microtonal tuning in twenty-first-century traditional Chinese music, published in Of Essence and Context (Springer, 2019).

Dr. David Villena teaches “The Philosophy of AI” in the current academic term and taught “The Ethics and Philosophy of Digital Technologies” in 2023/24. He works for the Master’s in AI, Ethics and Society at HKU and has extensive experience designing and facilitating courses on public sector ethics for civil service officials. Dr. Albert Lee
In 2014, Dr. Lee joined the University of Hong Kong (HKU) as a Research Associate and Post-doctoral Fellow. In 2020, he became a full-time Lecturer with the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering. At CAES, Ms. Carly Ng currently teaches a range of English enhancement courses, including English-in-the-Discipline courses, for undergraduate students. Her research interests revolve around inter-cultural communication, higher education studies, and higher education evaluation.
Mr. Patrick Leung
At CAES, Mr. Patrick Leung mainly teaches English-in-the-Discipline courses for undergraduates from a range of disciplines. His main research interests include corpus linguistics, language assessment, and Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) / Language Across the Curriculum (LAC).
