Peer Mentoring for the Clinical Transition in Dentistry

Abstract
A Peer Mentoring Project at HKU Dentistry was co-created with BDS students to support and mentor junior students. This was stimulated after a survey by BDS students found out that juniors were looking for mentoring support during their clinical transition in year 3. A group of senior BDS students volunteered to take on this role and have piloted a number of initiatives and are planning more for next year.

Abstract
For the past 5 years, HKUMed’s Student Wellness Team has carefully curated the Peer Supporters Program to provide Mental Health First Aid and Communication training to students in an effort to broaden community support amongst students. The presentation hopes to provide a brief overview of its structure and student reflections.

Student-as-Partners in Promoting University Campus Wellbeing and Engagement

Abstract
At HKUMed, student wellness issues are invariably linked to student academic issues. We strongly believe that student engagement is the first step towards promoting wellness and is a crucial part of a student-centered programme. The unengaged student inevitably loses out on access to the hidden curriculum and supporting resources. In this presentation, we discuss our implementation of a peer mentorship programme in the HKU MBBS undergraduate programme. In this scenario, senior students work hand in hand with student academic advisers to provide academic, co-curricular, and social support to first-year students in adapting to university life and the medical curriculum.
